Local SEO for Service Businesses: How to Rank in the Google Map Pack

The three businesses in Google’s Map Pack get most local calls. Here’s exactly how service businesses can earn — and keep — a top-3 spot.
Local SEO for service businesses: rank in the Google Map Pack

When someone searches “plumber near me” or “carpet cleaning in Dallas,” Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. That box — the Map Pack — is where most local calls and direction requests go. If you’re not in it, most customers never see you.

We’ve helped local businesses like Extreme Carpet Cleaning reach 50+ #1 local rankings and triple their calls. Here’s the playbook we follow.

How Google decides who ranks in the Map Pack

Google uses three main factors for local rankings:

  • Relevance — how well your business matches what was searched.
  • Distance — how close you are to the person searching.
  • Prominence — how well-known and trusted your business is online (reviews, links, citations and your website).

You can’t change distance, but you can improve almost everything else.

1. Complete and optimize your Google Business Profile

Your profile is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. Choose the most accurate primary category, add secondary categories, list every service, upload real photos, set accurate hours (including holidays), and post updates weekly.

2. Keep your name, address and phone (NAP) consistent

Google cross-checks your business details across the web — Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook and industry directories. Inconsistent details reduce trust. Audit your listings and fix any old addresses or phone numbers.

3. Build a steady flow of reviews

Businesses with more recent, positive reviews win more clicks and rank higher. Ask every happy customer for a review with a short link, and respond to every review — positive or negative — professionally.

4. Create service and service-area pages

Your website should have a dedicated page for each core service and each important city you serve. Each page should answer real customer questions, include local details and make it easy to call or request a quote.

5. Earn local links and citations

Links from local news sites, chambers of commerce, suppliers and community organizations tell Google you’re a real, trusted local business.

6. Don’t forget AI search

More customers now ask Google’s AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT for recommendations. Clear, consistent business information, strong reviews and helpful website content make it more likely you’ll be recommended.

How long does it take?

Most businesses see clear movement within 60–90 days, with results compounding over the following months. Unlike ads, those rankings keep bringing in calls without paying per click.
